Nest Alternatives Without Monthly Fees
Google's Nest ecosystem locks you into subscriptions for cameras and limited local control for thermostats. Here is how to replace every Nest product with something that works locally, costs less over time, and integrates with Home Assistant.
Part of our No-Subscription Smart Home Guide
What Nest Subscriptions Actually Cost
Google has gradually shifted the Nest ecosystem toward subscriptions. Understanding what you are paying for helps clarify what you need to replace.
| Product | Without Subscription | With Nest Aware ($8/mo) | 5-Year Sub Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nest Thermostat | Full functionality | N/A | $0 |
| Nest Cam (Battery) | 3 hours event history only | 30 days event history | $480 |
| Nest Doorbell (Wired) | No event recording | 30 days + continuous | $480 |
| Nest Protect | Full functionality | N/A | $0 |
Key insight: Nest thermostats and smoke detectors work fine without subscriptions. The real problem is cameras and doorbells, where Nest Aware is essentially mandatory for useful recording. That is where your replacement budget should focus.
Thermostat Alternatives
While Nest thermostats work without a subscription, they rely heavily on Google's cloud for scheduling intelligence and remote control. These alternatives offer local control, better Home Assistant integration, and no vendor lock-in. For detailed setup instructions, see our Ecobee + Home Assistant guide.

Camera Alternatives
Nest cameras are the most expensive part of the ecosystem to replace in subscriptions. These alternatives offer better recording, higher resolution, and zero monthly fees.
Reolink
4K cameras from $50-$130 with local microSD or NVR recording. On-camera AI detection for person, vehicle, and animal. Native Home Assistant integration. The Reolink RLC-810A is our go-to recommendation for most homes.
- 4K resolution (Nest maxes at 2K)
- 24/7 continuous recording on NVR
- $0 monthly forever
UniFi Protect
Premium option with the best mobile app in the local camera space. Requires UniFi console (UDM-SE or CloudKey Gen2+) but zero ongoing costs. Face recognition, license plate detection, and smart detections all processed locally.
- Best app experience
- Local AI (face + license plate)
- Unified with network gear
For a full breakdown, see our Ring Alternatives guide (the camera recommendations overlap) and our Local vs Cloud Camera Comparison.
Doorbell Alternatives
Nest doorbells are among the worst offenders for subscription dependency. Without Nest Aware, the wired Nest Doorbell records nothing. These alternatives give you local recording out of the box.
Reolink Video Doorbell (PoE)
~$100Our top recommendation. Power over Ethernet means no battery to charge and no WiFi connectivity issues. Head-to-toe 5MP view captures packages at your feet, which Nest's wide-angle lens struggles with. Records to Reolink NVR or microSD. Native Home Assistant integration via RTSP.
Installation note: Requires running an Ethernet cable to your front door. If you already have doorbell wiring, Reolink also makes a WiFi version that uses existing low-voltage wires.
Amcrest AD410
~$80Budget-friendly WiFi doorbell with microSD recording and RTSP support. Works with existing doorbell wiring. The Amcrest integration in Home Assistant provides motion detection events, two-way audio, and live view. No subscription required for any feature.
UniFi G4 Doorbell Pro (PoE)
~$300The premium option with package detection, built-in display for custom messages, and the best doorbell app experience available. Requires UniFi Protect ecosystem. Higher cost but zero recurring fees and exceptional build quality.
Smoke Detector Alternatives
Nest Protect is a solid product that does not require a subscription. But at $120 per unit with no Home Assistant integration, there are better options for a smart home that uses local control. Nest Protect also has a 10-year lifespan limit built in, after which it stops working entirely.
First Alert ZCOMBO-G (Z-Wave)
~$40Z-Wave smoke and CO combination detector that pairs directly with Home Assistant via a Z-Wave coordinator. Sends instant alerts to HA when smoke or CO is detected, enabling automations like turning on all lights, unlocking doors, and sending phone notifications. At $40 per unit vs $120 for Nest Protect, you can equip your entire home for less than the cost of two Nest Protects.
What You Get
- Smoke + CO detection (UL listed)
- Z-Wave integration with HA
- Battery level reporting
What You Lose vs Nest Protect
- No automatic self-testing
- No pathlight (nightlight) feature
- No voice alerts (just alarm sound)
Oklahoma note: Oklahoma building code requires smoke detectors in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every floor. CO detectors are required where fuel-burning appliances are present. Z-Wave detectors meet all code requirements since they are UL listed.
Migration Steps: Nest to Local
Migrate one product category at a time. This minimizes disruption and lets you learn each new system before tackling the next.
Export Your Data
Use Google Takeout to download all Nest data: camera clips, thermostat energy reports, and account information. This data will not be available after you deactivate devices. Log into takeout.google.com and select "Nest" from the product list.
Start with the Thermostat
The thermostat swap is the most disruptive since it affects your HVAC. Do this first so you have time to dial in schedules and comfort settings. Photo the existing wiring before disconnecting. Install the Ecobee (or alternative), connect to Home Assistant, and let it learn your schedule for a week. See our Nest Thermostat + Home Assistant guide for the current Nest setup if you want to keep it.
Replace Cameras and Doorbell
Install local cameras alongside Nest cameras for 1-2 weeks (parallel run). Verify angles, night vision, and notifications. Then remove Nest cameras and cancel Nest Aware. This is where you save the most money since Nest Aware subscriptions are the bulk of ongoing costs.
Swap Smoke Detectors
Replace Nest Protects with Z-Wave detectors one at a time. Pair each with your Z-Wave coordinator and verify it appears in Home Assistant. Set up automations: smoke detected triggers all lights on, sends phone notification, and optionally unlocks smart locks for emergency exit.
Deactivate and Sell
Factory reset all Nest devices and deactivate them in the Google Home app. Nest thermostats and Protects hold their resale value well on eBay and Facebook Marketplace. Nest cameras without a subscription are harder to sell, but the hardware still has value to buyers who want the Nest Aware plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about replacing Nest products.
Can I use Nest products without a subscription?
Partially. Nest thermostats work fully without a subscription since they use your existing HVAC system. Nest cameras and doorbells, however, lose most of their recording capability without Nest Aware. Without the subscription, you get 3 hours of event-based video history on newer battery models (Nest Cam Battery, Nest Doorbell Battery), but no continuous recording, no familiar face detection, and no activity zones. Older Nest cameras (Nest Cam IQ, original Nest Cam Indoor/Outdoor) get zero recording without a subscription.
What is the best Nest thermostat alternative for Home Assistant?
Ecobee thermostats are the most seamless Home Assistant alternative. They have a native Home Assistant integration, support local network control, include occupancy sensors in the box, and work with all major voice platforms. If you need a line-voltage thermostat (baseboard heating), look at Mysa or Sinope, both of which have Home Assistant integrations.
How much does Nest Aware cost per year?
Nest Aware costs $8/month ($80/year) for 30 days of event history, or $15/month ($150/year) for Nest Aware Plus with 60 days of event history plus 10 days of 24/7 recording. For a household with multiple cameras, that adds $80-$150 per year on top of the hardware costs. Over 5 years, that is $400-$750 in subscriptions alone.
Can I replace a Nest Protect smoke detector with a Z-Wave alternative?
Yes. Z-Wave smoke and CO detectors from First Alert (ZCOMBO-G) connect directly to Home Assistant via a Z-Wave coordinator. They provide the same safety functionality as Nest Protect (smoke and CO detection) plus smart home integration for automated responses like turning on lights during an alarm. They do not have the self-testing and pathlight features of Nest Protect, but they cost less and require no subscription or cloud connection.
Will I lose my Nest data if I switch to alternatives?
Google provides a data export tool through Google Takeout that lets you download your Nest camera footage and thermostat energy history before you deactivate your devices. Thermostat schedules cannot be directly imported into Ecobee or other alternatives, but your energy history is downloadable as a reference. Camera footage exports include clips and snapshots from your Nest Aware history.
