August Lock + Home Assistant
Cloud and Bluetooth integration options
Quick Summary
- ! Compatibility: Partial. Most models need August Connect Bridge
- ! Cloud required: Primary control method is via August cloud API
- ✓ Bluetooth option: Yale Access Bluetooth integration for local control
- ! Battery reporting: Gen 4 Wi-Fi locks report inaccurate battery levels
1. Prerequisites
Before starting, ensure you have:
- Home Assistant installed and running
- August smart lock installed on your door
- August or Yale Access app with your lock configured
- August Connect Bridge or August Doorbell (for most lock models)
2. Bridge Requirements
Not all August locks have built-in Wi-Fi. Check which hardware you need:
| Lock Model | Bridge Required? |
|---|---|
| August Wi-Fi Smart Lock (Gen 4) | No |
| August Smart Lock (Gen 1) | No |
| August Smart Lock Pro (Gen 3) | Yes |
| August Smart Lock (Gen 2) | Yes |
| Yale Assure Lock | Yes |
| Yale Assure Lock 2 | Yes |
The August Connect Bridge ($50-80) or an August Doorbell provides the required Wi-Fi connectivity for locks without built-in wireless.
3. Integration Setup
Step 1: Verify Lock in App
Ensure your lock is fully set up and controllable from the August or Yale Access app.
Step 2: Add Integration
- Go to Settings → Devices & Services
- Click + Add Integration
- Search for August
- If auto-discovered, click Configure
Step 3: Authenticate
- Enter your August account email and password
- Enter the 2FA verification code sent to your phone
- Wait for the integration to discover your devices
Step 4: Verify Entities
After setup, you should see lock entities for each connected lock, plus any doorbells or keypads.
4. Bluetooth Option (Local Control)
For local control without cloud dependency, you can use the Yale Access Bluetooth integration.
Requirements
- Home Assistant host with Bluetooth adapter
- Lock within Bluetooth range of your HA server
- August integration configured (for offline key sync)
Setup
- First configure the regular August integration
- Go to Settings → Devices & Services
- Click + Add Integration
- Search for Yale Access Bluetooth
- Follow the setup to pair with your lock
Note: The August cloud integration keeps your offline Bluetooth keys up to date. If you only use Bluetooth, you may need to periodically resync when keys expire.

Lock Control
- Lock and unlock the door
- View current lock state (locked/unlocked/jammed)
- DoorSense status (door open/closed, if equipped)
Sensors
- Battery level (note: Gen 4 Wi-Fi locks report inaccurately)
- Keypad battery (if equipped)
- Lock operation sensor
Doorbell Features (if equipped)
- Doorbell ding events
- Motion detection

Controls
- Wake lock from deep sleep

Lock Not Responding
- Check if lock is reachable in the August app
- Verify August Connect Bridge is online (if required)
- Use the Wake Lock button entity to wake from deep sleep
Battery Level Wrong
- Gen 4 Wi-Fi locks have known battery reporting issues
- Using rechargeable batteries causes incorrect readings in older locks
- Use only alkaline AA batteries in non-Gen 4 locks
Slow Updates
- Doorbell and lock operation sensors don't support real-time push
- Updates may be delayed until the next polling cycle
- Bluetooth integration provides faster local updates
Offline Keys Not Working
- The cloud integration needs to sync offline keys
- Try configuring with different Owner account
- Create a new owner account and grant lock access
8. Better Alternatives
For full local control of smart locks, consider these options:
| Lock | Protocol | Local Control |
|---|---|---|
| Schlage Z-Wave | Z-Wave | Full |
| Yale Assure (Z-Wave) | Z-Wave | Full |
| Kwikset SmartCode | Z-Wave | Full |
| Yale Linus L2 | Matter | Full |
See our Schlage Z-Wave Lock Guide for a fully local option.
9. Frequently Asked Questions
Does August work offline with Home Assistant?
Not fully. The primary August integration requires cloud connectivity through August's servers. However, you can add partial offline control using the Yale Access Bluetooth integration, which allows local control when your Home Assistant server is within Bluetooth range of the lock. For true offline-first operation, consider Z-Wave locks like Schlage or Yale Assure with Z-Wave modules.
Why is August marked as 'partial' compatibility?
August locks are marked as partial compatibility because they primarily rely on cloud connectivity for Home Assistant integration. Most models require the August Connect Bridge ($50-80), battery reporting on Gen 4 Wi-Fi locks is inaccurate, and there's no way to manage PIN codes from Home Assistant. Additionally, push updates aren't supported, so lock status updates may be delayed.
Is Z-Wave or WiFi better for August locks?
August locks don't have Z-Wave built-in. They use Bluetooth and WiFi (via bridge or built-in). If you want Z-Wave, look at Yale Assure locks with the AYR-MOD-ZW2 module instead. Yale and August are both owned by ASSA ABLOY, so Yale Z-Wave locks offer similar quality with full local control.
Can I use August DoorSense with Home Assistant?
Yes, DoorSense (August's door open/closed sensor) is exposed in Home Assistant through the August integration. It appears as a binary sensor showing whether your door is open or closed. This works with both the cloud integration and the Bluetooth integration.
What are better smart lock alternatives for Home Assistant?
For full local control with Home Assistant, consider: Schlage Z-Wave locks (BE469, BE468, FE599), Yale Assure with Z-Wave module, Kwikset SmartCode Z-Wave, or the new Yale Linus L2 with Matter support. These options work completely offline, support PIN code management through the Keymaster integration, and have no cloud dependency or subscription fees.
